Hi Jim,
I was interested in reading about the history of the TR-5, which has long
been a favorite of mine, and appreciate your compiling the information. I
checked my TR-5, however, and find that its serial number (s/n 107) does
not fit into the numbering patterns you've found.
I bought my TR-5 from R&L Electronics, along with an RV-75 and MS-7, about
4 years ago, but don't know how they acquired it. It seemed to be in
nearly new condition, with no signs of patches or hand-wired areas in the
circuitry. Thus I am not inclined to think it was a factory prototype,
(although the factory is only about a 30 minute drive from R&L). The s/n
is printed in the appropriate spot on the rear panel, in black numbers,
about 3/16 inch high, with no leading zeroes. Since then, I've been able
to find a nice matching L75 amplifier, and very much enjoy operating my
5-line station. Obviously, my TR-5 is a very early one, but now I'm curious
as to its exact history.
73,
Jim Garland W8ZR
