[Drake] Using an T-4XC with Collins 30S-1

I recently acquired a Drake "C' line. They seem to work well and the =
tune-up output on 20m is about 125 watts. I've tried running the T-4XC =
with my Collins 30S-1 while I repair my Drake L-7 amp. A problem =
apparent to me is that the 30S-1 should not be driven with over 50 watts =
and 30-40 watts is better. Consistent with other rigs I own, the =
appropriate way to reduce the T-4XC output would logically be to crank =
back the gain control. It does do that. However, once the gain control =
is turned back to about 10 o'clock or further CCW, the output wave form =
changes from smooth to a saw-blade appearance. I believe the Drake is =
not meant to run at anything short of full output. Is that correct? Is =
there anyway I can reduce the exciter power enough to safely drive the =
30S-1? Should I safely depend on the ALC to limit output?
Thanks for your thoughts,
