If you want a fuse, it's better to use a fuse. These days, HV fuses aren't a
problem - 1 1/4" ceramic ones will handle breaking 2kV without any problem,
or you can buy the genuine EHT ones that go in microwave ovens. Eimac and
Svetlana advise fitting a series resistor that's up to absorbing the energy
if something in the amp shorts the HT, and choose a value that will limit
the discharge current so it's non-damaging (around 20-30A for a medium
ceramic tube).
