Joel -
Drake specifically says "Do Not Use" for the 5 to 6 MHz range for the
4 Series. Probably because the Carrier Oscillator is at 5.645 MHz and
the PTO tunes from 4.955 to 5.455 MHz. Just too many unpleasant
possibilities. The TR-7 "might" be ok because of the up-conversion
scheme, but the PTO still runs in the 5.05 to 5.55 kHz range and the
carrier oscillator is at 5.645. Power supply decoupling is fine, but
...
Collins also says "Avoid operation" between 5 and 6.5 MHz for the
S-Line, again because their PTO tunes from 2.5 to 2.7 MHz, putting the
second harmonic at 5.0 to 5.4 MHz. Since the 60M frequencies are at
5332, 5348, 5368, 5373, and 5405 kHz, it would be asking for trouble!!
With the narrower band coverage of the S-Line (200 kHz v. 500kHz in
the Drake,) it might be possible to "weasel" in there with a specific
crystal and PTO setting, but I'd hate for us to lose this VERY closely
watched experimental "band" because of unanticipated spurs from MY
transmitter!!
I wouldn't want to risk it without a VERY close examination with a
spectrum analyzer.
Obviously it wouldn't be a problem to "listen" with the appropriate
crystal with any of the above, although you might hear a few strange
"spurious" signals.
Probably going to be limited to the KenYaeCom crowd!.
