Usually when loud hum shows up, your receiver high voltage power supply =
capacitors have dried out or failed, allowing rectified AC to couple =
onto your audio amplifier output. I have a Collins 75A1 doing that =
right now. Suggest you open the receiver and check the high voltage =
capacitors. After 6 years of Boat Anchoring, I've come to the =
conclusion that for a older tube radio like Collins, Drake, Halli, =
etc..., there is no such thing as a good electrolytic capacitor. They =
are either bad or going bad and you don't know about it :^) My personal =
opinion. =20

I have a nice condition Drake 1A, all original, no mods, works fine but =
sold as is due to=20
its age. I also have the original manual.
I got this rig not working, replaced the bad tubes, fixed a half dozen =
or so cold solder joints
and realigned it. It works fine on all bands.=20
I like the and collect the later Drake stuff but have all I need.
I would consider trading for a Collins 75A4, 32V, 51J4 or maybe =
something similar, or may sell .=20

When buying used transmitters and amps ( as most on this list do) when is it
prudent to replace things from the get-go like bleed resistors and power
supply caps, etc. Do most do this as a matter of routine if all original
components. Does this also automatically checking alignment too? Or is this
overkill until a problem presnts itself? Is there a guide somewhere?
Thanks.....

Alan,
If I'm going to use the gear, I do replace all the electrolytics and
bleeders (or other "out of spec") resistors as a matter of course. I guess
the purists or true collectors might not do this. Just my .02 worth.

Don
Is there a way to check the values of resistors and capacitors in circuit
withot unsoldering one end??

Sure, nodal analysis as used in commercial board test systems.

Subject: [Drake] Washington D.C. radio related tourist stops?
Folks:
I have both the pain (it is cold) and the pleasure of being able to
spend
the next four days in our nation's capital. Does anyone have any
radio-related must-see/do recommendations? Thanks, Skip Warren AD5HJ,
Houston

I'm not privy to a way to accurately do that, so I lift the resistors on =
one end. I just replace the electrolytic caps and the paper ones with =
Orange Drops without checking. I'm not suggesting that's the way to do =
it, just what I do, hi.

Hi, Gang, I tried to order the .82 ohm - 2 watt resistor from TEPRO. This
was
the reply.
Does ANYONE know where I can buy Just one?
