[Drake] T-4XC Spot problem

When attempting to use the "spot" function in CW mode
I get multiple, very closely spaced signals on  my R-4C.
These extend about 5 kc/s above and below the desired frequency.
I can also hear the same signal(s) on a separate receiver.
This occurs on any band.
Also, in the separate receiver I can detect the VFO, crystal oscillator,
and premixer signals in the T-4XC and R-4C and they are very clean and
on frequency.
In SSB mode I get the "tweety bird" signal which works as described
in the user manual.
Any ideas as to the cause ?
