[Drake] Noisy(?) R-4B

Hi all,
I'm new to Drake (Hammarlund here) and now have an R-4B.
After all I've read about this radio (all I could find to read, btw) I really 
thought that it would be very quiet with the antenna disconnected. Mine has a 
fair level of white noise. The noise is not noticeable while receiving fairly 
loud cw, but is definitely there when trying to dig out a weak one. This is, 
of course, with the antenna connected.
Is this normal for this radio, or should it be close to dead quiet?

Maybe I should point out that I'm using 8 ohm phones and an 8 ohm speaker. 
Could the impedance mismatch be a problem?
