Mike - thanks for the offer. Here's what I know....

I checked the BFO (with a general coverage receiver, I haven't tried to scope
the level to see if its correct ) for signal on the mother board at the
trace to the pin and it was there - I'm guessing its at the right level but
can scope to check it for sure with a little luck (scope is a POS but useable
most days)

I then checked around the coil and toroid that feeds the product detector and
found no BFO sig

I shot a signal generator signal into the product detector at the toroid and
everything worked pretty much as it should, so...

Somewhere between the goes inta and the goes outta of the amp iIthink I got a
problem :)

I checked the coil L11something, next to the toroid, and it seemed open - I
took off the shielding and unsoldered one end, at which point the coil fell
out on the floor of the shop and rolled somewhere (I haven't found it yet, I
suspect the one end was open electrically and physically, at least part of
the problem...but I should be able to find and fix coil, but

In the meantime I jumpered the coil in hopes that some BFO signal would feed
thru, but still no SSB detection - I don't know if jumpering it with a
properly operating amp should cause some detection but my guess was it should
 - so I could have a bad coil, or toroid, or any bad amp component, but I
can't get at the board while powered up to see where the problem is. I also
injected signal at the toroid end of the open coil and got nothing, which
confounded me, cuz the only explanation I can figure for that is something is
wrong between the coil and detector, but injecting at the toroid
worked....and there ain't much between there.

Any good guess would really be appreciated - worst case I thought I'd try to
make sure the coil was fixed and then replace all the amp components, or
breadboard an outboard amp and see if it fixed the problem, but both are a
lot of wild guessing .....About the only other thing I could think of was
resistance checks on the board, but I don't think values are in the manual.

  Thanks, Scott
