Ham Radio on the KON-TIKI... with tubes

Forwarded from: Arnie Coro of Radio Havana's "DXers Unlimited"
programme (coro at enet.cu)

Dear amigos:
Today I learned about the passing away of the last Kon Tiki expedition
participant ...
He was one of the two radio operators, and of course... a radio amateur.
It was very interesting to learn that the Kon Tiki transmitters used the
direct filament
heating - no separate cathode- and instant heating to operating
temperature- 2E30 tubes.
10 Watts .... almost QRP...
It would be really nice to be able to take a look at the actual circuit
diagram of the
40 and 20 meters transmitter, as well as the one that was built to
operate only on 10 meters.
I wonder the reasons behind also carrying a 6 meter band transmitter ,
when activity
on that band was at such low levels worldwide in 1947, when the Kon Tiki
expedition took place.
Has anyone here at the GLOWBUGS thought on building a replica of the
Kon
Tiki rigs ?
The PARASET , of World War II fame, has become a popular homebrewing
project, and many
replicas are now on the air...
The Kon Tiki's 10 Watt rigs using the 2E30's deserve the same luck ...
so that they will
be known by present day radio amateurs too.

P.S. Will gladly receive the circuit diagrams and any information on the
Kon Tiki rigs !!!
