Comments: SEC's GENERAL REPORT (May 2007) EMCOMMWEST 2007 turned out to be
an overwhelming success again this year. Mostly great comments by both
local and out of area visitors. Great forums presented by many from as far
away as Southern California and Arizona on a variety of new topics which
have not been covered before, as well as a few updates back by popular demand.
At the banquet, we honored Max Cornell, K0MC SK with a new annual award,
"Elmer of The Year" for his unfailing dedication to helping other hams,
with emphasis on new hams coming into the hobby. A plaque was presented to
his widow, Annie Cornell, K7ANI at his services on May 7, right after
EMCOMMWEST.
Had a very productive breakfast with SM, SEC and all 3 DECs present. I
think this is a first, given our distant locations from each other.
Discussed changes to the Section Emergency Plan which is now in the final
stages before publishing.
Our Thursday night ARES/RACES VoIP Net is gaining momentum, with a good
group of NCS operators stepping up so that we can gain a good pool to
rotate duties. It can be found on the IRLP Western reflector, 9258 along
with Echolink # 152566. It is open to all members, with emphasis on
leadership. Hope to hear more checkins as time progresses.
I had the opportunity to visit with the DCART group in Douglas County,
under EC Dick Young, KD7JMR. They are a small but dedicated group who have
some great training programs in place and they work a ton of events. Nice
job Dick and crew, and thank you for your hospitality.
That's it for this month. Thanks again for everyone's help and dedication.
73 from Don, KQ6FM SEC.
SOUTHERN DISTRICT REPORT: Southern NV District EC Report - May 2007 - Busy
month, I attended EMCOMMWEST for the first time. Spent most of May working
on summarizing what was learned from the event and setting up a meeting
with Clark County ARES/RACES leadership to discuss those lessons learned. I
worked on several antenna configurations to evaluate what works best on the
75 M ARES net. I discovered that the Yo-Yo-Tenna was easy to tune and
provided broad banded coverage.
South Nye Co. EC Report by Jerry KC6ILH - Slow month. We did however put in
about 93 hours on fund raising. On the nets HF. at 1430UTC on Saturday the
RARA 80M, NV ARES at 1500UTC on 80M, Monday through Saturday 1830UTC
Beehive UT net 40M, and Monday through Saturday from 1830 to around 1930
UTC the Manana Net (maritime mobile) on 20M. From my home I monitor
147.180, 147.060(can talk on both from my home), 146.880, 147.790(can talk
on both from just about any place in the valley) as well as local repeaters
via my scanner. Hope this is what you where looking for. Until next month
keep your batteries ready for FIRE season.
North Nye Co. EC Report by Dave KE7LC - I monitor and participate in the
ARES HF nets. Several other HF nets of a non-ARES function (country
cousins, etc). The 146.64 can be linked to Las Vegas via IRLP. Whether you
can reach me on that depends on if I'm monitoring it at the time.
Esmeralda County EC Report by Ron WB5KLJ - Have not been monitoring the HF
noon time net (7268.5 Khz). HF station down until I get it moved into new
office, and build antenna for 75 and 40 meters
Clark County EC Report by Charlie AA5QJ - Weekends were busy in May as
members supported the Susan B Komen Race for the Cure on May 5, the 29 hour
Desert Winds Adventure Race near Lake Mead on May 12-13, and the Silver
State Nevada Open Road Challenge between Lund and Hiko NV on May 2. Other
members attended EMCOMMWEST on May 4-6.
Vern Garman K0EGA, AEC Operations/Training attended the Local Emergency
Planning Committee meeting on May 17 and briefed the attendees on
ARES/RACES activities. Charlie Kunz AA5QJ, EC/RACES Officer, gave a
presentation on Ham Radio as a Community Resource to attendees of the
Nevada Statewide Evacuation Planning Project Workshop in Las Vegas on May
29. Bob Miller WA6MTY in Reno and Joe Giraudo N7JEH in Elko, made similar
presentations to their area workshops.
The Red Cross will conduct a full-scale exercise on Sat June 9, and
ARES/RACES will participate. Report de KB7REO, Southern DEC.
NORTHEAST DISTRICT REPORT: Greg Barker-KE7FFN has been in contact with the
management of the Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital in Elko. They are
interested in setting up an Amateur Radio communication center in the
facility for back up communication in time of need.
The Elko Amateur Radio Club is working on putting the finishing touches on
yet another repeater on the I-80 corridor, east of Wells, NV. This repeater
will be located on Pequop Summit and will improve coverage between Wells
and Wendover, NV. This repeater will be connected to the existing linked
system, providing communication and emergency autopatch capabilities from
West of Winnemucca well into the State of Utah, a distance of over 300
miles. The coverage maps for this system can be seen at the EARC website
located at http://www.w7lko.com .
The Elko Volunteer Examiner Team held yet another session in June resulting
in two new General and two new Extra Class upgrades. Preparations are
underway for the upcoming Field Day and Open Road Race operations through
the summer in the Northeast Nevada District. Report de Joe Giraudo, N7JEH
DEC NE.
NORTHWEST DISTRICT REPORT: Churchill County - EC Paul Willcoxon KE7CRZ: I
had a meeting on Friday May 4th with Mert Mickelson, Emergency Manager for
Churchill County. He and I discussed ARES and RACES and how our group can
best serve the county. I believe that Mert and I have come up with an ideal
plan for ARES and RACES. We will have the complete cooperation of the
county. I will be setting up testing for the equipment at the EOC on a
regular basis.
We will also be updating the RACES plan for Churchill County to bring it up
to date with the new State of Nevada RACES plan. We will also be updating
the ARES communications plan for Churchill County. Mert will schedule a
meeting with Steve Endacott, the Emergency Manager for the City of Fallon
to form a combined plan for city and county.
Rich Gibitz has been appointed AEC for technical matters. We are very
fortunate to have Rich for this position. Traffic handling and ICS training
is continuing. On May 7, Rich Gibitz, KE6QK and I traveled to Silver
Springs, for a meeting with Patty Polish, EC of Lyon County and Harry Bryant.
New I.D. cards and Sheriffs I.D. cards have been distributed to the
members. RACES forms have been filled out by the membership and RACES
certificates from the Emergency Manager have been issued to the members. I
attended the Churchill County local emergency planning commission meeting
on May 15, 2007 and have been invited to attend future meetings. We have
two new members, Lee Duval-AA7LD and Art Gibbs-KC7GDD, welcome aboard.
Douglas county - EC Dick Young KD7JMR: DCART continues to prepare, along
with the SIERA club, for the Wings of Change on Field day weekend. Other
events for later in the year are also in preparation.
