Nevada Section News Summary for December'05
Some stories are abbreviated. See the Nevada Section website at
http://nv.arrl.org for the complete stories.
January 12, 2006 - ARES Monthly Report for December'05 SEC Summary December
is usually a quiet month, with the holidays and many folks being out of
town. This year is no exception, but still there were several things going
on in the section. Many of the Nets report limited check-ins due to holiday
travel and such. Much emphasis this time of year can be put on preparation
for the continuing winter months, with urging all to stay ready with
batteries charged, generators ready and go-kits loaded with winter gear. I
urge all to take these steps at this time of year. Planning for the new year
is also en vogue, and I am gearing up with ideas which I will be sharing
with the DECs for what we would like to accomplish in 2006. One of those
goals is to see that we have all of the county EC spots filled if possible.
Finally, as the year closes, I wish to thank one and all for their help,
support and willingness to support our programs in the section. You are a
blue ribbon team, and I am proud to be able to work with all of you. We have
some tremendous talent in Nevada, and it encouraging to know that our ranks
are growing with new members who are eager to train, learn, prepare and
accept the challenges before us. Thank you once again, and I look forward to
an exciting new year ahead. Happy New Year to you all! 73 de Don Carlson

SOUTHERN DISTRICT REPORT: Not much activity in December. Planning continues
to install an IRLP/Echolink node in Tonopah. That node will be on 146.46
simplex. The computer and radio are currently being set up for installation,
which should be within the next few months. Dave KE7LC set up his radio to
cross band repeat the Mt. Rose repeater in Reno to monitor activities during
the Truckee River Floods. DEC checked into the Section HF Net New Year's Eve
morning and later on the Noon Net. This was right in the middle of the
activity (see Northwest report for details). Skywarn Recognition Day went
well. Participation in the Skywarn Conference in Las Vegas was also
interesting. Skywarn also celebrated in Vegas with members participating on
December 3, making contacts through various modes around the country.
IRLP/Echolink used from the LVARC Comms trailer at NWS office. Operations
were from 0700 until 1400. Total reported contacts, 61. 23 members checked
into the ARES/RAC ES Net on New Year s Eve, 1900 through 1/1/06 at 0400. The
Clark County EOC Active, but abbreviated from previous years. A quiet
evening overall. Happy New Year greetings from DEC and team to all. 73 de
Glenn Hale, KB7REO
NORTHWEST DISTRICT REPORT: Skywarn Recognition Day was a hit in Reno, as
many hams helped out with the station at WX7RNO at NWS Reno. Many contacts
and records for NWS were set. Thanks to AEC Dee Arnold, KA7LOZ for helping
to coordinate the effort. A flooding event took place in and around
Reno/Sparks on 12/31/05, and NWS called hams into action. Reports were given
from throughout the NW District. DEM in Carson City monitored and reported
that our information was more timely than conventional methods, and amateur
radio was commended. Storm watch began at 4:30am, and lasted through late
afternoon. Local amateurs were kept busy with information passing. Dee,
KA7LOZ and Zahra, W7ZMA were primary at the WX7RNO station. Thanks to all
for a job well done. Douglas County DCART members were also dispatched for
flood watch to the County EOC which activated, as well as state DEM. A total
of 4 members used a total of 28 hours. Many roads were closed due to the
flooding. Highway 395 was the only one open reliably. DCART training
cancelled for December due to the holidays. Churchill County had no flooding
and things quiet. General group meeting planned for January. Major flood
event also called Lyon County ARES members into action, as they served
multiple agencies on New Years Eve. Hams manned a shelter, activated Lyon
County ECC and served Search and Rescue/Fire Department. All agencies
pleased with the performance. Great job everyone! Lyon County also activated
on 12/22/05 supporting the Wood Cutter incident. Members staffed Command
post and two SAR vehicles during the search for a man who possibly had a
medical emergency and could not be located. Event under the leadership of
AEC Bob Freeman, KE7ATZ. Mutual aid was asked for by Lyon County through DEC
Doug Abramson, KA7FOO who responded personally. Another incident in NW
District, where Matt Parker, N7TOD took report from Jim Utterback, WB7ARC
reporting that an injury traffic accident occurred, about 12 miles south of
Gardnerville on US 395. Information relayed to NHP. A Ham Cram Course being
planned for January 7 with about 50 people signed up, including Washoe
County Emergency Manager, Aaron Keniston. More on that next month. Until
then, Happy New Year! - 73 de Doug Abramson, KA7FOO
NORTHEAST DISTRICT REPORT: Little to report from the Northeast this month,
as things remained fairly quiet during the holiday season. The Elko team did
participate in Skywarn Recognition Day on December 3, with very good results
once again. They operated from the NWS office in Elko. - 73 de Joe Giraudo,
N7JEH
January 12, 2006 - Ideas for school demos of Amateur radio Mark Spencer,
WA8SME, the ARRL Education and Technology Program Coordinator, responded to
a question from a league member about how to do a classroom demonstration of
Amateur radio. His response was particularly insightful. With his kind
permission, we make it available on the section website to all who might be
doing a classroom demo. Thanks Mark!

December 12, 2005 - OOPS! The recent Nevada Section News Summary that was
e-mailed claims to be for October 2005. Uhhhh... no, it's really for
November 2005. Sorry about that, chief. Lashes have been applied as
