License Exam Quiz #352

de Steve, AE8AT

The new year has arrived. The first quiz topic of the year is how to CQ. It is sometimes interesting how the question pools break up what would seem to be a common topic. The Technician pool has 4 questions where “CQ” appears in the question (ignoring when it appears only in the answer). The General question pool also has 4 questions. The Extra question pool had one, and it was a rules question regarding transmission near the band edge. Hence the Extra question is about responding to a CQ’ing station.

T2A12 What should you do before calling CQ?

A. Listen first to be sure that no one else is using the frequency

B. Ask if the frequency is in use

C. Make sure you are authorized to use that frequency

D. All these choices are correct

G2B06 How can you avoid harmful interference on an apparently clear frequency before calling CQ on CW or phone?

A. Send “QRL?” on CW, followed by your call sign; or, if using phone, ask if the frequency is in use, followed by your call sign

B. Listen for 2 minutes before calling CQ

C. Send the letter “V” in Morse code several times and listen for a response, or say “test” several times and listen for a response

D. Send “QSY” on CW or if using phone, announce “the frequency is in use,” then give your call sign and listen for a response

E2C11 How should you generally identify your station when attempting to contact a DX station during a contest or in a pileup?

A. Send your full call sign once or twice

B. Send only the last two letters of your call sign until you make contact

C. Send your full call sign and grid square

D. Send the call sign of the DX station three times, the words “this is,” then your call sign three times

Answers:

T2A12 = D

G2B06 = A

E2C11 = A
