License Exam Quiz #333
de Steve, AE8AT
This week the quiz commemorates Gladys Kathleen Parkin, born 27 September 1901 (Wikipedia will say 1900, but reliable sources have 1901). She earned her amateur license in 1916 at the age of 15. Her call was 6SO (sometimes seen 6S0). One of the earliest licensed female ham radio operators, she was routinely identified as the youngest female operator in the San Francisco Chronicle. She also obtained a professional license becoming the third woman to earn the first class license. She would have built her own spark gap transmitter and other equipment, typical of the time. She is remarkable both for the young age she acquired the skill to obtain her license and for trailblazing.
