License Exam Quiz #332

A little late on the topic, but since the quiz’s birthday took precedence last week we will catch up on a significant event in radio that occurred 15 August 1947. The radio program Milkman’s Matinée was hosted in New York and the BBC in London co-hosted a program. The “first time a transatlantic disk jockey program has been attempted” and also the “first time a duet will have been sung between the two continents.” https://www.newspapers.com/article/brooklyn-eagle-mailmans-matinee/17444259/ The singers were part of the cast of Oklahoma and sung “People Will Say We’re in Love”. The duet, Mary Hatcher in New York and Harold Keel in London. A little more on the show before we get to the questions. The show ran either late at night or early morning depending on your definition, but 2AM to 5AM is mentioned in this article. https://www.newspapers.com/article/brooklyn-eagle-milkmans-matinee/17442680/ A reference could not be found, but I’ll hazard a guess that the name is taken from milkmen (people who delivered milk to homes) who also worked at the early hours of the day. It was an all request program, with telegrams bringing in requests, costing perhaps 20 cents to send. And as for the milkman, milk delivery was common in the U.S. at the time, dropping to about 15% in the 1970’s and 1% in the 1990’s if my Google search can be trusted. The quiz questions all play off of the duet, dual host, etc. of the historic broadcast.
