TNG – Thursday, August 15, 2024
DARA Clubhouse, 6619 Bellefontaine Rd. Dayton, OH 45424. The meeting begins around 7pm.
There have been some hamfests recently (Columbus, Cincinnati and Huber Heights among others). Did you attend? Anything interesting to share with the group?
Recently, Logon Ricart demonstrated a $200 3D printer (Bambu Lab A1 Mini). While many may use a 3D printer to print models created by others, a more practical use for TNG members is printing custom parts for our own projects.
Is there interest in a two or three session class to learn how to design these parts? There's too much going on on Thursday nights to try and do it then, so I'm thinking of Saturday afternoons after the license classes when the classroom is available. This would be something hands on where you bring your own computer. I don't think we would actually do the 3D printing so you don't have to bring (or even own) a 3D printer. I'm looking for both students and instructors (or people to be both).
DARA/TNG owns a 3D printer that has never been used (AFAIK) since we purchased it back in 2020. Maybe we can come up with some way for members to use it.
If anyone wants to or knows someone who might want to give a presentation at a future TNG or if you have a topic that you would like to see, please let me know.
Everyone is invited!!!

Hans Christian Oersted was born 14 August 1777. A Danish chemist and physicist, it was he who, in an evening lecture in April of 1820, observed that electrical current passing through a wire would deflect a compass needle. The Oersted is a unit of magnetic field strength named in his honor as is the Oersted Medal. This week’s quiz is on some flavors of magnetism present in the hobby. Reference used was britannica.com accessed on 4 August 2024.
T5C03 What describes the ability to store energy in a magnetic field?
A. Admittance
B. Capacitance
C. Resistance
D. Inductance
G3A08 How can a geomagnetic storm affect HF propagation?
A. Improve high-latitude HF propagation
B. Degrade ground wave propagation
C. Improve ground wave propagation
D. Degrade high-latitude HF propagation
E0A06 Why are there separate electric (E) and magnetic (H) MPE limits at frequencies below 300 MHz?
A. The body reacts to electromagnetic radiation from both the E and H fields
B. Ground reflections and scattering cause the field strength to vary with location
C. E field and H field radiation intensity peaks can occur at different locations
D. All these choices are correct
Answers:
T5C03 = D
G3A08 = D
E0A06 = D
