DARA Pizza Get-Together Friday, February 16
I’m trying to revive the old third Friday get-together hosted for years by Mike Buehler (sk). Join me (weather permitting) around 6:30pm at the Marion’s Piazza in Beavercreek (1320 N. Fairfield Rd). While everyone pays for their own food and drink, Mike always had discount pizza coupons. I’ll try and get some, so see me before ordering. This is a family friendly event. – N8ME.
Everyone is invited!!!
LICENSE QUIZ #266
de Steve, AE8AT
Valentine’s day is this week. Questions on cardioid patterns from antennas, or perhaps somehow equating QSL cards with some other cards would be cute. Unfortunately, could not find anything in the Technician questions that met the high standards we set for the DARA Repeater Quiz. Even tried going dark using RF-burns as the topic (since one of the potential St. Valentine’s was burned, or had his body burned...history is very murky). Well, guess what else is this week? Single’s Awareness Day (SAD)! And it comes without all the baggage of which Roman emperor killed which Valentine! If you find yourself reflex-gagging at all the PDAs (public displays of affection) on February 14th, perhaps celebrating SAD on February 15th is something to consider. The quiz topic this week is something you can find everywhere in the hobby, single sideband! (Or single-sideband if you prefer)
T8A06 Which sideband is normally used for 10 meter HF, VHF, and UHF single-sideband communications?
A. Upper sideband
B. Lower sideband
C. Suppressed sideband
D. Inverted sideband
G2A06 Which of the following is an advantage of using single sideband, as compared to other analog voice modes on the HF amateur bands?
A. Very high-fidelity voice modulation
B. Less subject to interference from atmospheric static crashes
C. Ease of tuning on receive and immunity to impulse noise
D. Less bandwidth used and greater power efficiency
E7E04 What is one way a single-sideband phone signal can be generated?
A. By using a balanced modulator followed by a filter
B. By using a reactance modulator followed by a mixer
C. By using a loop modulator followed by a mixer
D. By driving a product detector with a DSB signal
Answers:
T8A06 = A
G2A06 = D
E7E04 = A
