License Exam Quiz #386
de Steve, AE8AT
The quiz topic this week is test equipment.
The quiz topic this week is automatic control! But since this is quiz #386, let’s take the flashback to the microprocessor, the Intel 80386. If Google’s AI search is accurate, the original release was October 17, 1985. In 1988, the 386SX scored a 16-bit data bus. The high speed processor in 1989 was running 33 MHz. The 386 processor was discontinued in 2007, less than a month from its 22nd birthday. If we compare that processor to the current state-of-the-art, again relying on Google, the clock speed is in GHz rather than MHz. The memory inside the modern processor is greater than all the hard drives of a 1980’s era computer lab. Multi-threaded multi-core in the 1980’s was a fantasy; the 386 would require multiple clock cycles to complete basic instructions. Now that we all feel old, on with the quiz!
T1A06 On which of the following HF frequencies can automatically controlled amateur propagation beacons be found?
A. Anywhere in the Technician portion of 10 meters
B. Anywhere, if they are registered with the FCC
C. In a specific portion of each of the HF Technician bands
D. On ten meters, between 28.200 MHz and 28.300 MHz
G1E11 On what bands may automatically controlled stations transmitting RTTY or data emissions communicate with other automatically controlled digital stations?
A. On any band segment where digital operation is permitted
B. Anywhere in the non-phone segments of the 10-meter or shorter wavelength bands
C. Only in the non-phone Extra Class segments of the bands
D. Anywhere in the 6-meter or shorter wavelength bands, and in limited segments of some of the HF bands
E1C05 Under what situation may a station transmit third party communications while being automatically controlled?
A. Never
B. Only when transmitting RTTY or data emissions
C. Only when transmitting SSB or CW
D. On any mode approved by the National Telecommunication and Information Administration
Answers:
T1A06 = D [FCC Part 97.203(d)]
G1E11 = D [FCC Part 97.221, 97.305]
E1C05 = B [FCC Parts 97.221(c)(1) & 97.115(c)]
