License Exam Quiz #341
de Steve, AE8AT
This week the quiz draws inspiration from the work of Wilhelm Eduard Weber. Born 24 October 1804 he was a colleague of Carl Gauss; both have units of measure named for them associated with magnetism. In 1833 this pair demonstrated an early telegraph. Weber worked to define electrical measurement providing foundational work for James Clerk Maxwell’s theories (~1860s), which in turn led Heinrich Hertz to experimentally confirm radio waves (1888). Marconi’s transmission was in 1897. Chains of scientific discovery to application in practical use are a fascination. Let’s see if the question pools contain equally fascinating questions related to Weber’s work.
T3B03 What are the two components of a radio wave?
A. Impedance and reactance
B. Voltage and current
C. Electric and magnetic fields
D. Ionizing and non-ionizing radiation
G3A09 How can high geomagnetic activity benefit radio communications?
A. Creates auroras that can reflect VHF signals
B. Increases signal strength for HF signals passing through the polar regions
C. Improve HF long path propagation
D. Reduce long delayed echoes
E3B04 What are “extraordinary” and “ordinary” waves?
A. Extraordinary waves exhibit rare long-skip propagation, compared to ordinary waves, which travel shorter distances
B. Independently propagating, elliptically polarized waves created in the ionosphere
C. Long-path and short-path waves
D. Refracted rays and reflected waves
Answers:
T3B03 = C
G3A09 =A
E3B04 = B
