License Exam Quiz #343

de Steve, AE8AT

This week the quiz is timed for the Leonids. These meteors arrive in early November, peak around the 16th or 17th, and depart in early December. They are visible to the naked eye. Leonids originate from comet 55P/Tempel-Tuttle and are among the fastest meteors. To see them, lay on back with your feet to the East, and allow time for your eyes to adjust to the dark. The Leonids are known to provide bursts and color. The 1966 “storm” peaked with approximately 1000 meteors falling in a 15 minute period! This year will not be that exciting, but consider it an opportunity to practice for the 2034 or 2035 Leonids which NASA expects to reach 500 per hour. Alas, I am sad to pass along the news that the next true storm (1000+ per hour) will arrive around 2099. However, here’s an interesting thought for you; when the International Space Station is deorbited (2031), what kind of fun should the amateur radio community plan for this event?
