License Exam Quiz #325

On July 2 Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan took off on their historic flight. The twin-engine Electra 10-E was fitted with additional fuel tanks raising her take-off weight about 50% for an estimated range around 4000 miles. The transmitter was a Western Electric model 13C, which was intended to be used on 3105 kHz (96.52m) at night and 6210 kHz (48.26m) by day, either in AM-voice or Morse code. A Western Electric model 20B receiver (200-1500kHz and 2.5-12 MHz) (1498-200m, and 120-25m) for weather and direction finding. A Hooven Radio compass was fitted with a Bendix loop antenna. The radio compass loop antenna was best suited to 300-600 kHz (999-500m), but the beacon at Howland Island (the US Coast Guard cutter Itasca) was transmitting at 7500 kHz (40m). The factors contributing to the loss are the extremely small island, long range navigation over open water, storms, clouds obscuring celestial navigation, Earhart could transmit but apparently not receive, and a disconnect where the Itasca was expecting Morse while Earhart transmitted voice. According to ameliaearhart.com <http://ameliaearhart.com/>, the final transmissions were, at 7:42 a.m., “We must be on you, but we cannot see you. Fuel is running low. Been unable to reach you by radio. We are flying at 1,000 feet.” And then at 8:45 a.m., “We are running north and south.” The wreck remains to be found.
