License Exam Quiz #323

de Steve, AE8AT

This week the quiz returns to historic events looking towards NASA’s Echo balloon satellite project. The Echo balloons were a passive reflector, like moon bounce on a smaller scale. These were large balloons, roughly 100 feet in diameter and weighing hundreds of pounds. They carried solar panels, NiCd batteries, and a radio sending telemetry data at 107.9 MHz. Project Echo intended to work out whether communicating by satellites was possible. These were not balloons inflated on the earth’s surface and then lazily floated skyward. These balloons were launched into low earth orbit on a rocket and inflated in space! That first launch was in June 1960...and it ended up in the ocean. Two later launches did make it to space allowing researchers to understand how ground stations and satellites would work. Additionally, satellite based navigation made its first baby-steps with this project, and support equipment would discover the comic microwave radio background which resulted in the 1978 Nobel Prize.

T8B03 Which of the following are provided by satellite tracking programs?

A. Maps showing the real-time position of the satellite track over Earth

B. The time, azimuth, and elevation of the start, maximum altitude, and end of a pass

C. The apparent frequency of the satellite transmission, including effects of Doppler shift

D. All these choices are correct

G4E10 Why should a series diode be connected between a solar panel and a storage battery that is being charged by the panel?

A. To prevent overload by regulating the charging voltage

B. To prevent discharge of the battery through the panel during times of low or no illumination

C. To limit the current flowing from the panel to a safe value

D. To prevent damage to the battery due to excessive voltage at high illumination levels

E1D04 Which of the following is required in the identification transmissions from a balloon-borne telemetry station?

A. Call sign

B. The output power of the balloon transmitter

C. The station's six-character Maidenhead grid locator

D. All these choices are correct

Answers:

T8B03 = D

G4E10 = B

E1D04 = A [FCC Part 97.119(a)]
