"One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind" Neil Armstrong, July 20, 1969

The Apollo 11 mission launched on July 16th and splashed on July 24th, 1969. Apollo is the next topic to try to connect to amateur radio question pools! Neil Armstrong, Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin, and Michael Collins were the astronauts. Michael Collins is not related to Arthur Collins, the founder of the radio company, but the primary S-band radio equipment aboard both the lander and command module were manufactured by Collins. The S-Band radios were the main link to Earth supporting voice (downlink and uplink), biomedical telemetry, spacecraft telemetry, and slow-scan television signal. The lander and command modules had different S-band frequencies, with downlink at 2282.5MHz and 2287.5 MHz with uplink at 2101.8 and 2106.4 MHz. The command module had four 31-inch dish antennas, while the lander had a smaller dish they did deploy a 10-foot dish on the moon to transmit video. Additionally, VHF equipment was used between the command module and lander, and a UHF beacon was used to located the capsule after splashdown. Numerous stations on earth, Intelsat III, and the Deep Space Network supported the mission. The S-band frequency range is still reserved for space use today, including Mars missions.
