License Exam Quiz #330

This week the quiz commemorates the work of Mary Golda Ross. Born on August 9, 1908, Mary was Native American and a member of the Cherokee Nation. As an aerospace engineer, she was hired by Lockheed as a founding member of the Skunk Works. She worked on the P-38 Lightning performing stress, aerodynamic, compressibility, and performance analysis resolving issues with the early designs. Her work following the was included calculations for space reentry, orbital mechanics, and space vehicle design. This included the upper stage rocket for Gemini and also earth-orbiting satellites, named Agena. She co-authored NASA’s Planetary Flight Handbook Volume III, providing the mathematics for spaceflight missions to Venus and Mars.
