DARA Membership Meeting – Mar 3, 2023
We will have our next DARA Membership Meeting on Friday, March 3, 2023, at the Greene County Expo Center, 120 Fairgrounds Rd, Xenia Ohio at 7:00pm. We will meet in the Mercantile Building, our usual meeting room. We are in for an excellent discussion by the DARA President, Jack Gerbs. You will want to be present but if you are unable to attend, we will also be on Zoom. See below for Zoom instructions.
This month’s presentation is “Antenna’s and Antenna Analyzers” by Jack Gerbs, WB8SCT
Jack has been licensed since 1974 and mostly enjoys operating CW.
Jack’s presentation will cover the basics of resonant and non-resonant antennas. This includes a discussion of a simple halfwave dipole, end fed halfwave antennas, random length antennas and vertical antennas. He will demonstrate how to use different antenna analyzers to measure key antenna parameters. He will then wrap up with a demonstration of how to design and build simple matching networks based on the data gathered from an analyzer. There will be an actual demonstration of the tools used to measure an antenna and the design and implementation of a matching network.”

International Women’s Day is March 8th, so it seems important to focus on a famous woman in science (hopefully radio related). I believe Hedy Lamar and Edith Clarke were inspirations for earlier quizzes, and after an extended search apparently the only women who worked directly with radio. So, we turn to Shirley Ann Jackson who earned her PhD in 1973 from MIT, becoming the second African American woman to earn a PhD in the U.S. and the first from MIT. Skipping ahead to 1976 and her time with AT&T Bell Labs, she studied the behavior of electrons on the surface of liquid helium films (a quantum physics thing too deep for a Repeater quiz). She would serve on many company boards, universities, and government roles including heading the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and several Presidential advisory roles. She has received numerous awards for scientific achievement, both U.S. and internationally. All far too much to list here. For her work tickling electrons on the surface of helium, the quiz topic is the sun and its effects on amateur radio. (The sun being roughly 25% helium.)

A. From dawn to shortly after sunset during periods of high sunspot activity
B. From shortly after sunset to dawn during periods of high sunspot activity
C. From dawn to shortly after sunset during periods of low sunspot activity
D. From shortly after sunset to dawn during periods of low sunspot activity
G3A02 What effect does a Sudden Ionospheric Disturbance have on the daytime ionospheric propagation of HF radio waves?
A. It enhances propagation on all HF frequencies
B. It disrupts signals on lower frequencies more than those on higher frequencies
C. It disrupts communications via satellite more than direct communications
D. None, because only areas on the night side of the Earth are affected
E3A12 What is the cause of auroral activity?
A. The interaction in the F2 layer between the solar wind and the Van Allen belt
B. An extreme low-pressure area in the polar regions
C. The interaction in the E layer of charged particles from the Sun with the Earth’s magnetic field
D. Meteor showers concentrated in the extreme northern and southern latitudes
