** License Exam Questions – 231

In ye’ olde days, a radio was composed of analog parts and perhaps built by the ham that planned to operate it. Today integrated circuits have grown in complexity to where the manufacture of sophisticated systems that run software is common. By “system” I refer to the radio, the computer you probably connected to it, or the computer you probably use to log contacts. The topic this week are areas where software is found in our hobby, whether inside the radio or to support it.

T4A07 Which of the following connections is made between a computer and a transceiver to use computer software when operating digital modes?

A. Computer “line out” to transceiver push-to-talk

B. Computer “line in” to transceiver push-to-talk

C. Computer “line in” to transceiver speaker connector

D. Computer “line out” to transceiver speaker connector

G7C11 What is meant by the term “software-defined radio” (SDR)?

A. A radio in which most major signal processing functions are performed by software

B. A radio that provides computer interface for automatic logging of band and frequency

C. A radio that uses crystal filters designed using software

D. A computer model that can simulate performance of a radio to aid in the design process

E3C11 What does VOACAP software model?

A. AC voltage and impedance

B. VHF radio propagation

C. HF propagation

D. AC current and impedance
