** License Exam Questions of the week – week #177
Valentine’s day is just ahead, so that will be the quiz topic for the week. Since Valentine’s day and the amateur radio exam occupy nearly opposite ends of the human experience, some clarification of the connection between the questions and February 14th is necessary. The day we celebrate in mid-February is known for one of many Valentine’s in history; it is not a date invented by the greeting card industry. Our man is Saint Valentine of Rome, and he is the patron saint of bee keepers, young people, epilepsy, fainting, travelers, greetings, engaged couples, love, happy marriages, and plague. Not sure how that last one fits with the rest, but perhaps an XYL can enlighten us. Valentine is often symbolized by birds and by roses. On to the questions! The Technician question concerns satellites, which are often referred to as “birds” by those who chase contacts via that mode. Fainting in humans seems a bit like fading in signals, which is our General question. And lastly, the Extra question should be self-explanatory.
T8B08 What is meant by the statement that a satellite is operating in mode U/V?
A. The satellite uplink is in the 15 meter band and the downlink is in the 10 meter band
B. The satellite uplink is in the 70 centimeter band and the downlink is in the 2 meter band
C. The satellite operates using ultraviolet frequencies
D. The satellite frequencies are usually variable
G3B01 What is a characteristic of skywave signals arriving at your location by both short-path and long-path propagation?
A. Periodic fading approximately every 10 seconds
B. Signal strength increased by 3 dB
C. The signal might be cancelled causing severe attenuation
D. A slightly delayed echo might be heard
E9C02 What is the radiation pattern of two 1/4-wavelength vertical antennas spaced 1/4-wavelength apart and fed 90 degrees out of phase?
A. Cardioid
B. A figure-8 end-fire along the axis of the array
C. A figure-8 broadside to the axis of the array
D. Omni-directional
