The Thursday Night Group will meet

Thursday, January 23 at 7:00 pm at the DARA Clubhouse.

------------------------------------------------------

Things this week:

1. New Faces at TNG

If you have attended a TNG Thursday the last few months, you might have
noticed a lot of new and young faces. We currently have 2 groups of young
people attending. They are the DEFCON 937 a local hacking group that our
Jeremy Hong, KD8TUO, has introduced to us and a group of Civil Air Patrol
that are working on the Motorola radios they use.

2. DEFCON 937

This Thursday at 6 pm Jeremy Hong, KD8TUO, will host the DC937 (short for
DEFCON 937) groups first meeting at the clubhouse.

This group used to meet at Proto BuildBar (closed in December), on the 4th
Thursday of the month @6:00 PM. I have mentioned this situation to a few of
the TNG regulars already, and so far everyone has been receptive and
welcoming to the idea of integrating this group with TNG. The DARA board
also gave it a thumbs up.

I believe that integrating the hackers with TNG it is a natural fit, because
hackers, cybersecurity professionals, and information security professionals
(Prime example is our own Jack G. WB8SCT) have a lot in common with Hams as
far as technical interests and skills. A lot of the attendees of DC937 have
used and are interested in SDR (Software Defined Radio) also! I have also
seen this as an opportunity to bring down the average age of the TNG and get
more of my friends and their friends to get into ham radio. Also, a reminder
that the record for most licenses issued/upgraded in a single day was set at
DEFCON 22 in 2014!

This upcoming Thursday (1/23/2020), will be the first DC937 meeting at the
DARA clubhouse, we are scheduling to meet at 6:00 PM, there aren't any
presentations currently planned, but it will most likely be some discussion
about current hacking/cybersecurity news and tools in the past month. We are
also planning several "conference" type events later this year.
