** License Exam Questions of the week
The Thursday Night Group will meet
Thursday, May 30 at 7:00 pm at the DARA Clubhouse.

Things this week:
1. Were you prepared for the tornadoes? + HARA
Were you ready? If not, lets discuss what you should have ready if the need
arises in the future.
Here are some video & photos of the damage to HARA

2. YAGI Antenna workshop part 5 - returns June 6 - NEXT WEEK!!
Join us for a Build-It: Yagi Antenna Workshop. This multi-session series
will focus on yagi antennas the vhf/uhf frequency bands, including designs
for ATV and EME. But HFers will also gain by attending.
This series will start with a good overview on antennas. The next session
will look at the function of a balun, the different types, and actually do
some testing of baluns. We'll look at how to select your build-it yagi, and
present some easy-to-assemble options for the driven element. For the
hands-on building, you can build your own, build with a group, or be an
observer.
The final sessions will include tuning and testing the yagi antennas, and if
there is interest, could include an antenna gain measurement event to verify
how well the antennas perform.
This 7 session course is planned to run every other week and will run for 7
sessions.
Here is the proposed schedule:
Build-It: Yagi Workshop Series
. Antenna Overview (Joe, WA8OGS)
March 21 - completed
. Balun Overview, and testing baluns (Mike, W8RKO)
April 4 - completed
. Driven Element Options (Joe, WA8OGS)
April 18 - completed
. Selecting Your Build-It Yagi (Joe, WA8OGS)
May 2 - completed
. Antenna Modeling (Mike, W8RKO)
June 6
. Start Building - Hands On (group)
June 20
. Tuning & Testing Your Yagi (Tom, N8ZM, & group)
June 24 or
maybe on a Saturday
. Antenna Gain Measurements [maybe on a Saturday, 10am-2pm;
include
lunch?] (Tom, N8ZM, & group)
Many thanks to Joe Burke, WA8OGS, and Mike Suhar, W8RKO, who have put this
together.
3. Projects
Bring something to work on. What you building?
4. License Exam Questions of the week
One question is drawn from each of the three question pools. Steve, AE8AT,
is providing these questions. Thanks Steve
Answers are at the end of this email.
We received a question regarding the strange mix of letters and numbers that
begin each question. Every exam question has a unique combination of
letter-number-letter-number. The first letter is a T, G, or E to identify
the question pool: Technician, General, or Extra. Next is a single number
representing the category, for example, category zero is safety in all three
exam pools. The first letter-number pair is called the "sub-element". The
second letter is a "group" containing related questions. Example,
sub-element G8 is Signals and Emissions, with group C of that sub-element
being Digital Emission Modes. The questions are numbered sequentially:
G8C01, G8C02, and so forth always with a 2-digit number at the end. The
question identity is included in case of a typo or some "help" from
autocorrect obscures either the question or the answer.
Since we had a little gathering of our ham friends in town recently, there's
a chance some of you might have come home with new electronic components.
(And if you didn't, congratulations! You have less to explain.)
"Electrical components" is a subelement of the question pools and the topic
for this week's quiz!
T6A06 What type of electrical component stores energy in a magnetic field?
A. Resistor
B. Capacitor
C. Inductor
D. Diode
G6B17 What is the general description of a DIN type connector?
A. A special connector for microwave interfacing
B. A DC power connector rated for currents between 30 and 50 amperes
C. A family of multiple circuit connectors suitable for audio and control
signals
D. A special watertight connector for use in marine applications
E6C09 What is a Programmable Logic Device (PLD)?
A. A device to control industrial equipment
B. A programmable collection of logic gates and circuits in a single
integrated circuit
C. Programmable equipment used for testing digital logic integrated circuits
D. An algorithm for simulating logic functions during circuit design
