The Thursday Night Group will meet

------------------------------------------------------
Things this week:
1. DARA Auction - April 5
Bring your stuff and your $$ Auction NEXT week April 5
2. Nancy's mobile check-out - this week - March 28
Nancy, KC8RMT, is having problems with her mobile radio and the antenna
mounted on her car. Let's check it out for her and maybe learn a little bit
doing it.
3. YAGI Antenna workshop part 2 - April 4
Join us for a Build-It: Yagi Antenna Workshop. This multi-session series
will focus on yagi antennas the vhf/uhf frequency bands, including designs
for ATV and EME. But HFers will also gain by attending.
This series will start with a good overview on antennas. The next session
will look at the function of a balun, the different types, and actually do
some testing of baluns. We'll look at how to select your build-it yagi, and
present some easy-to-assemble options for the driven element. For the
hands-on building, you can build your own, build with a group, or be an
observer.
The final sessions will include tuning and testing the yagi antennas, and if
there is interest, could include an antenna gain measurement event to verify
how well the antennas perform.
This 7 session course is planned to run every other week and will run for 7
sessions.
Here is the proposed schedule:
Build-It: Yagi Workshop Series
. Antenna Overview (Joe, WA8OGS)
March 21 - completed
. Balun Overview, and testing baluns (Mike, W8RKO)
April 4
. Driven Element Options (Joe, WA8OGS)
April 18
. Selecting Your Build-It Yagi (Joe, WA8OGS)

. Antenna Modeling (Mike, W8RKO)
June 6
. Start Building - Hands On (group)
June 20
. Tuning & Testing Your Yagi (Tom, N8ZM, & group)

. Antenna Gain Measurements [maybe on a Saturday, 10am-2pm;

lunch?] (Tom, N8ZM, & group)
Many thanks to Joe Burke, WA8OGS, and Mike Suhar, W8RKO, who have put this
together.
4. License Exam Questions of the week
One question is drawn from each of the three question pools. Steve, AE8AT,
is providing these questions. Thanks Steve
Answers are at the end of this email.
We received a question regarding the strange mix of letters and numbers that
begin each question. Every exam question has a unique combination of
letter-number-letter-number. The first letter is a T, G, or E to identify
the question pool: Technician, General, or Extra. Next is a single number
representing the category, for example, category zero is safety in all three
exam pools. The first letter-number pair is called the "sub-element". The
second letter is a "group" containing related questions. Example,
sub-element G8 is Signals and Emissions, with group C of that sub-element
being Digital Emission Modes. The questions are numbered sequentially:
G8C01, G8C02, and so forth always with a 2-digit number at the end. The
question identity is included in case of a typo or some "help" from
autocorrect obscures either the question or the answer.
CQ Magazine runs a contest for working all prefixes. March 30-31 is the
contest date for the single side band contest. The Morse Code contest is
May 25-26. This week's quiz covers single side band!
