Projects

** License Exam Questions of the week

The Thursday Night Group will meet

Thursday, March 14 at 7:00 pm at the DARA Clubhouse.

------------------------------------------------------

Things this week:

1. Clean-up

This week we will continue cleaning up and deciding what to get rid of at
the DARA Auction. Please come help

2. HF - UHF Antenna Analyzer UPDATE

Phil is working on the software to match the new board

3. NOTICE - YAGI Antenna workshop starts MARCH 21

Join us for a Build-It: Yagi Antenna Workshop. This multi-session series
will focus on yagi antennas the vhf/uhf frequency bands, including designs
for ATV and EME. But HFers will also gain by attending.

This series will start with a good overview on antennas. The next session
will look at the function of a balun, the different types, and actually do
some testing of baluns. We'll look at how to select your build-it yagi, and
present some easy-to-assemble options for the driven element. For the
hands-on building, you can build your own, build with a group, or be an
observer.

The final sessions will include tuning and testing the yagi antennas, and if
there is interest, could include an antenna gain measurement event to verify
how well the antennas perform.

This 7 session course is planned to run every other week starting March 21
and will run for 7 weeks.

Many thanks to Joe Burke, WA8OGS, and Mike Suhar, W8RKO, who have put this
together.

4. License Exam Questions of the week

One question is drawn from each of the three question pools. Steve, AE8AT,
is providing these questions. Thanks Steve

Answers are at the end of this email.

We received a question regarding the strange mix of letters and numbers that
begin each question. Every exam question has a unique combination of
letter-number-letter-number. The first letter is a T, G, or E to identify
the question pool: Technician, General, or Extra. Next is a single number
representing the category, for example, category zero is safety in all three
exam pools. The first letter-number pair is called the "sub-element". The
second letter is a "group" containing related questions. Example,
sub-element G8 is Signals and Emissions, with group C of that sub-element
being Digital Emission Modes. The questions are numbered sequentially:
G8C01, G8C02, and so forth always with a 2-digit number at the end. The
question identity is included in case of a typo or some "help" from
autocorrect obscures either the question or the answer.

Questions - 6 Groups]

George Ohm was born 16 March 1789, in Erlangen, Bavaria, Germany. He became
a professor of mathematics at the Jesuits' College at Cologne in 1817. He
published Ohm's Law in 1827, which was so coldly received he resigned his
post. In 1841 he was awarded the Copley Medal, the most prestigious
scientific award in the United Kingdom.

T5D10 What is the voltage across a 2-ohm resistor if a current of 0.5
amperes flows through it?

A. 1 volt

B. 0.25 volts

C. 2.5 volts

D. 1.5 volts

G5A09 What unit is used to measure reactance?

A. Farad

B. Ohm

C. Ampere

D. Siemens

E4B12 What is the significance of voltmeter sensitivity expressed in ohms
per volt?

A. The full scale reading of the voltmeter multiplied by its ohms per volt
rating will indicate the input impedance of the voltmeter

B. When used as a galvanometer, the reading in volts multiplied by the ohms
per volt rating will determine the power drawn by the device under test

C. When used as an ohmmeter, the reading in ohms divided by the ohms per
volt rating will determine the voltage applied to the circuit

D. When used as an ammeter, the full scale reading in amps divided by ohms
per volt rating will determine the size of shunt needed

5. Projects
