5. License Exam Questions of the week

One question is drawn from each of the three question pools. Steve, AE8AT,
is providing these questions. Thanks Steve

Answers are at the end of this email.

We received a question regarding the strange mix of letters and numbers that
begin each question. Every exam question has a unique combination of
letter-number-letter-number. The first letter is a T, G, or E to identify
the question pool: Technician, General, or Extra. Next is a single number
representing the category, for example, category zero is safety in all three
exam pools. The first letter-number pair is called the "sub-element". The
second letter is a "group" containing related questions. Example,
sub-element G8 is Signals and Emissions, with group C of that sub-element
being Digital Emission Modes. The questions are numbered sequentially:
G8C01, G8C02, and so forth always with a 2-digit number at the end. The
question identity is included in case of a typo or some "help" from
autocorrect obscures either the question or the answer.

Hope everyone was able to enjoy Field Day this year. The bands were crammed
with traffic! The weekend also kicks off Lightning Safety Awareness Week.
(Held off on this topic so as to not jinx the weather for Field Day!)

T0A07 Which of these precautions should be taken when installing devices for
lightning protection in a coaxial cable feed line?

A. Include a parallel bypass switch for each protector so that it can be
switched out of the circuit when running high power

B. Include a series switch in the ground line of each protector to prevent
RF overload from inadvertently damaging the protector

C. Keep the ground wires from each protector separate and connected to
station ground

D. Mount all of the protectors on a metal plate that is in turn connected to
an external ground rod

G0B09 Why should soldered joints not be used with the wires that connect the
base of a tower to a system of ground rods?

A. The resistance of solder is too high

B. Solder flux will prevent a low conductivity connection

C. Solder has too high a dielectric constant to provide adequate lightning
protection

D. A soldered joint will likely be destroyed by the heat of a lightning
strike

E0A01 What is the primary function of an external earth connection or ground
rod?

A. Reduce received noise

B. Lightning protection

C. Reduce RF current flow between pieces of equipment

D. Reduce RFI to telephones and home entertainment systems
