** License Exam Questions of the week

The Thursday Night Group will meet

Thursday, June 13 at 7:00 pm at the DARA Clubhouse.

------------------------------------------------------

Things this week:

1. Work on your antenna designs & obtaining materials.

Have you decided what band, number of elements for your beam? Or where to
get the parts to build it? Lets talk.

2. Upcoming Hamfest

3. YAGI Antenna workshop part 5 - returns June 20!!

Join us for a Build-It: Yagi Antenna Workshop. This multi-session series
will focus on yagi antennas the vhf/uhf frequency bands, including designs
for ATV and EME. But HFers will also gain by attending.

This series will start with a good overview on antennas. The next session
will look at the function of a balun, the different types, and actually do
some testing of baluns. We'll look at how to select your build-it yagi, and
present some easy-to-assemble options for the driven element. For the
hands-on building, you can build your own, build with a group, or be an
observer.

The final sessions will include tuning and testing the yagi antennas, and if
there is interest, could include an antenna gain measurement event to verify
how well the antennas perform.

This 7 session course is planned to run every other week and will run for 7
sessions.

Here is the proposed schedule:

Build-It: Yagi Workshop Series

. Antenna Overview (Joe, WA8OGS)
March 21 - completed

. Balun Overview, and testing baluns (Mike, W8RKO)
April 4 - completed

. Driven Element Options (Joe, WA8OGS)
April 18 - completed

. Selecting Your Build-It Yagi (Joe, WA8OGS)
May 2 - completed

. Antenna Modeling (Mike, W8RKO)
June 6

. Start Building - Hands On (group)
June 20

. Tuning & Testing Your Yagi (Tom, N8ZM, & group)
June 24 or

maybe on a Saturday

.             Antenna Gain Measurements [maybe on a Saturday, 10am-2pm;
include

lunch?] (Tom, N8ZM, & group)

Many thanks to Joe Burke, WA8OGS, and Mike Suhar, W8RKO, who have put this
together.

4. Projects

Bring something to work on. What you building?

5. License Exam Questions of the week

One question is drawn from each of the three question pools. Steve, AE8AT,
is providing these questions. Thanks Steve

Answers are at the end of this email.

We received a question regarding the strange mix of letters and numbers that
begin each question. Every exam question has a unique combination of
letter-number-letter-number. The first letter is a T, G, or E to identify
the question pool: Technician, General, or Extra. Next is a single number
representing the category, for example, category zero is safety in all three
exam pools. The first letter-number pair is called the "sub-element". The
second letter is a "group" containing related questions. Example,
sub-element G8 is Signals and Emissions, with group C of that sub-element
being Digital Emission Modes. The questions are numbered sequentially:
G8C01, G8C02, and so forth always with a 2-digit number at the end. The
question identity is included in case of a typo or some "help" from
autocorrect obscures either the question or the answer.

Between the rain showers last weekend, preparations were made for Field Day
2019! The quiz questions are inspired by preparations.

T3A03 What antenna polarization is normally used for long-distance
weak-signal CW and SSB contacts using the VHF and UHF bands?

A. Right-hand circular

B. Left-hand circular

C. Horizontal

D. Vertical

G4B12 What problem can occur when making measurements on an antenna system
with an antenna analyzer?

A. Permanent damage to the analyzer may occur if it is operated into a high
SWR

B. Strong signals from nearby transmitters can affect the accuracy of
measurements

C. The analyzer can be damaged if measurements outside the ham bands are
attempted

D. Connecting the analyzer to an antenna can cause it to absorb harmonics

E3B06 Which of the following amateur bands most frequently provides
long-path propagation?

A. 80 meters

B. 20 meters

C. 10 meters

D. 6 meters
