Projects
** License Exam Questions of the week
The Thursday Night Group will meet
Thursday, April 4 at 7:00 pm at the DARA Clubhouse.
------------------------------------------------------
Things this week:
1. DARA Auction - this FRIDAY
Bring your stuff and your $$ Auction this week
2. YAGI Antenna workshop part 2 - This Thursday - April 4
Join us for a Build-It: Yagi Antenna Workshop. This multi-session series
will focus on yagi antennas the vhf/uhf frequency bands, including designs
for ATV and EME. But HFers will also gain by attending.
This series will start with a good overview on antennas. The next session
will look at the function of a balun, the different types, and actually do
some testing of baluns. We'll look at how to select your build-it yagi, and
present some easy-to-assemble options for the driven element. For the
hands-on building, you can build your own, build with a group, or be an
observer.
The final sessions will include tuning and testing the yagi antennas, and if
there is interest, could include an antenna gain measurement event to verify
how well the antennas perform.
This 7 session course is planned to run every other week and will run for 7
sessions.
Here is the proposed schedule:
Build-It: Yagi Workshop Series
. Antenna Overview (Joe, WA8OGS)
March 21 - completed
. Balun Overview, and testing baluns (Mike, W8RKO)
April 4
. Driven Element Options (Joe, WA8OGS)
April 18
. Selecting Your Build-It Yagi (Joe, WA8OGS)
May 2
. Antenna Modeling (Mike, W8RKO)
June 6
. Start Building - Hands On (group)
June 20
. Tuning & Testing Your Yagi (Tom, N8ZM, & group)
June 24 or
maybe on a Saturday
. Antenna Gain Measurements [maybe on a Saturday, 10am-2pm;
include
lunch?] (Tom, N8ZM, & group)
Many thanks to Joe Burke, WA8OGS, and Mike Suhar, W8RKO, who have put this
together.
3. License Exam Questions of the week
One question is drawn from each of the three question pools. Steve, AE8AT,
is providing these questions. Thanks Steve
Answers are at the end of this email.
We received a question regarding the strange mix of letters and numbers that
begin each question. Every exam question has a unique combination of
letter-number-letter-number. The first letter is a T, G, or E to identify
the question pool: Technician, General, or Extra. Next is a single number
representing the category, for example, category zero is safety in all three
exam pools. The first letter-number pair is called the "sub-element". The
second letter is a "group" containing related questions. Example,
sub-element G8 is Signals and Emissions, with group C of that sub-element
being Digital Emission Modes. The questions are numbered sequentially:
G8C01, G8C02, and so forth always with a 2-digit number at the end. The
question identity is included in case of a typo or some "help" from
autocorrect obscures either the question or the answer.
This week the quiz questions are drawn from the sub-elements least used in
order to keep balance.
T2A07 What is meant by "repeater offset?"
A. The difference between a repeater's transmit frequency and its receive
frequency
B. The repeater has a time delay to prevent interference
C. The repeater station identification is done on a separate frequency
D. The number of simultaneous transmit frequencies used by a repeater
G9D11 Which of the following is a disadvantage of multiband antennas?
A. They present low impedance on all design frequencies
B. They must be used with an antenna tuner
C. They must be fed with open wire line
D. They have poor harmonic rejection
E5A06 What is the magnitude of the circulating current within the
components of a parallel LC circuit at resonance?
A. It is at a minimum
B. It is at a maximum
C. It equals 1 divided by the quantity 2 times Pi, multiplied by the square
root of inductance L multiplied by capacitance C
D. It equals 2 multiplied by Pi, multiplied by frequency, multiplied by
inductance
