Here is an email I got regarding the Dummy Load project you paid for.

One of the designers is doing a 3D printed case for + $5.00. also see the note regarding the parts cost.

They are doing a ‘build day’

All:

Al has arranged for us to use the Conference Room at the Anderson Center, 7850 Five Mile Rd, Cincinnati, OH 45230. We have it reserved from 8AM to 1PM on Oct 7th, which is a Saturday. Please be on time, as our best guess is that soldering the resistor network will take each of you about 45 minutes; maybe a little less if you're experienced in soldering. Please remember to bring your own "stuff" to the build that we are not providing. I will get you a list of that in the next couple of days along with an assembly manual. You will need to have your quart can prepped if you want to test it at the build. Otherwise, we will only test the electronics of the build.

Our thanks to Al for finding something much better than an unheated garage (which is probably what I would have come up with).

Jack, W8TEE

I am not sure I will be able to go as this is the same date as the new Hamfest at the Michigan Speedway and I hope to go to that….

Do any of you want to attend the ‘build day’ and pick stuff up for our group?

Subject: More DL Build info

All:

I was not able to secure the Nanos or OLED's at the discount I'd hoped for, mainly because I ordered from domestic suppliers so we would have the parts here in time. The exporters would not guarantee delivery before the build takes place. Also the Banana binding posts and plugs cost far more than expected. The end result is that the cost skyrocketed to $15.44 from the $13.00 estimate. I'll underwrite this and cope with the details later. I would rather pay this and see our club grow and have fun while we're doing it than bog things down in what costs what.

On the good side, you don't need to bring heavy gauge copper wire, as Al is donating the necessary footage and has enough wiring jigs built that it should proceed pretty quickly to build the resistor network. Also, Al is fabricating a custom case for the OLED display and circuit board. In essence, it is a fairly standard black plastic case, but with a molded cutout for the OLED and a bezel that fits around the OLED. The 9v battery will fit in the case, too. (The kit includes a 9v battery power snap.) The case will have two banana plugs

that come out from the bottom of the case and plug directly into the dual banana terminal block (the red and black posts in the JPG). Al's making the case for $5 and is custom fit for the OLED display. Al needs to have a count soon as each case takes over 3 hours to "print". To get an idea of Al's work, he printed the display front panel for the signal generator you see on our group's web site (https://groups.io/g/GCBG).

I will be getting you a template for the terminal posts so you can drill the holes before you come to the build. You will also need to drill a hole for the antenna connector that you want to use. When you drill any hole(s) in the lid, sandwich the lid between two scraps of wood. Otherwise, the lid is so thin you run the risk of tearing the metal. I will also be sending you a list of materials you should bring (e.g., case, 9v battery, can, mineral oil, etc.) and what will be waiting for you. Because we are working on nice tables, you should plan to bring a piece of cardboard (e.g., 24"x24") to work on so we don't put burn marks on the tables. We will tape the cardboard in place. You'll need to bring your own tools, too (e.g., soldering iron, solder, wire cutters, sponge or tip cleaner, safety goggles, etc.)

Please let me know ASAP whether you want Al to fabricate a case for you.

Jack, W8TEE
