The Thursday Night Group will meet
Thursday, October 12 at 7:00 PM at the DARA Clubhouse.
This week : Greg AB8RG - Low Cost Compact Transportable 80/40 meter NVIS
Antenna with Sectional Mast System
There are many Near Vertical Incidence Skywave (NVIS) antenna designs
available that provide for usable communications in the range between
groundwave and conventional skywave distances - usually 30-400 miles.
The NVIS antenna version being presented is adapted from an existing design.
The design has been simplified to reduce cost to less than twenty dollars,
including support mast. The simplified design also provides for rapid setup
and teardown time to maximize operating time and fun.
The performance exceeds or is on par with many NVIS designs. This particular
antenna design has been in use for several years at local SW Ohio clubs. It
has been the primary antenna at events such as ARRL Field Day and Ohio State
Parks on the Air where there are dozens to hundreds of stations within reach
of this antenna. For example, during this past Field Day when the band was
open, the operators sustained between 2 and 3 contacts per minute with this
antenna using 75 watts. They had to fend off several pileups. The antenna
allowed a decent quantity of logged contacts.
The mast system is constructed from 1-1/2" PVC pipe. The ends are swaged
(flared) with a homebrew tool, keeping cost down. The mast swaging tool will
be demonstrated.
The 80/40 meter antenna and support mast will be available for inspection
and demonstration. A similar antenna will also be shown which is a 10 - 15 -
20 meter inverted vee with a similar support mast.
The demonstrated antenna may not be the best antenna since sliced bread,
however, it can be useful to help provide timely communications within its
limitations.
