I have a new J-38

Richard,

Interestingly enough it does fit a Bunnell frame.
I found 2 Bunnell frames that fit, one is a skeleton frame and the other
is a Triumph style frame. The Bunnell arm is longer by about 7/8".
I have a Minominee frame but it does not work on that one. The
contacts do not line up.

It also fits an old Iron frame, possibly Bunnell, like what is found on a KOB.
However the angle of the arm is not right, it sits too low at the contact spacing adjusting screw.

The knob screw is removable, it is just a stud. Ahe arm is brass.

Bunnell must have made keys with a brass arm and a steel trunnion prior to the
steel lever key in 1881. I do not have any catalog info on his early keys prior to that date.
I tried the arm in one of the 1881 keys with the bolted uprights and bolted wire connectors,
but it does not fit that style. The contacts do not line up.

This does not mean the arm is Bunnell but it is usable on at least 2 of the Bunnell model frames.
Because of the angle of the arm on these frames it would seem it would have been in a frame
with taller uprights or a much lower anvil contact.

I suspect the threaded nub for the knob is actually the threaded
part of a knob which came out of the knob. I can't tell from the pix if
it could be unscrewed from the lever.
There were many keys of the basic "steel Lever" or Triumph pattern
including the ubiquitous J-38 but the exact dimensions can vary. For
instance, long ago I bought a key which came in a Western Union New York
Repair Shop box. It was actually made from a collection of parts that
didn't fit very well. the lever, which you show, is just a little long
to fit either a Bunnell or Western Electric key, i.e. the contact does
not quite line up but works. I have no idea what kind of key it came
from. I think there must have been at least twenty companies who made
keys, all very much alike, but probably differing in exact details and
dimensions. Sorry I can't be of more help but I would suggest measuring
the distance of  the adjustment screws and the contact from the pivot
for comparison with other keys.
