Here's an interesting reply I received from my Facebook Radio-Officers group:

When I worked taking very fast Morse we were taught base line characters the Vere Foster method. I remember a instructor writing on a blackboard 3" high characters in foreign language at 40 wpm absolutely perfect writing.

I've never heard about Vere Foster. The man who posted comes from Queensland, Australia.
