Do you "need" to use DeOxit D5? No, of course not. But I use and recommend it because I have four decades of experience with it (DeOxit and before that Cramolin). I've variously used it or not and had many opportunities to compare "with" and "without". On the whole, it helps a stubborn contact cleaning get perfectly reliable and almost all cleanings last much longer.
Right next to the DeOxit can I keep a bottle of liquid D5 (sprayed out of the can) on
every workbench. I dip a Xcelite "greenie" screwdriver in the liquid
and use it to bring a drop to where I need it. In my view, spraying is only for things you cannot reach. If I can reach the contacts with a probe I will dip or spray DeOxit D5 on the tip and use that to deliver it to the contact. Or if the contacts are completely exposed as on a telegraph key) I will use a piece of paper to bring a drop or two to the contacts and wipe on and off.
Corrosion? I've lived and worked in seven different regions of the country, and the speed of and nature of the corrosion varied wildly. But DeOxit helped in every location.
