I agree. It seems Amateur Radio has morphed into 'radio sport'.  Perhaps it appeals to those who thrive on  competition. I don't get it. Contests are quite boring to me. And I suspect many of the high speed contesters can't converse using CW as a language. Try getting them into a ragchew at 25 wpm and they are lost.  
Another annoyance is people responding to a CQ with only their callsign.  Are they calling me or just in a pileup ?  I just won't reply unless I know they are calling me. 
On contest weekends I've gone either up or down to get away from them and resorted to calling CQ Ragchew.  Still I get answered by contesters who can't copy the word ragchew !  
Maybe I've been around too long (40 yrs)
but I cut my teeth on ragchews and have no interest in contests. Jim N5KY
