had an email from Phil w4pqc who educated me as follows:
(begin forwarded email; some lines redacted)
A few years ago I was a member of Metro
Atlanta Telephone Pioneer Amateur Radio Club. One of the things that the
Pioneers did was to repair 'Talking Books' and many other community
services. Well, in the Radio Club I was teaching a radio class for
beginners. Since we were next door to the Bureau of Blind Services,
several of their clients also joined in on the class. Plus we had several
people with hearing impairments that also joined in. . Now, this got
interesting... I had to do visuals as well as explain these visuals. To
make a long story short. I built a small box that had a speaker with half
of a soft rubber ball glued to the cone. It vibrated with the CW and also
had LEDs that lit with CW. The speaker was modulated with 120 Hz when a CW
signal was received. A good CW operator, placing their hand or fingers on
the ball, could easily copy code above 20 WPM. And, now we had a device
that could be used for visually impaired people to easily communicate with
hearing impaired people and vice versa.using CW
A couple of years ago I discussed this with Howard Bernstein - WB2UZE who
is with the Long Island Radio Club that now makes these devices. Why am I
telling you this? Like you indicated on your web page, I am also suffering
from hearing loss. I can only interpret about half of the English Language
phonemes and have quit entirely using phone or sideband. To me, veryone
really does sound like Donald Duck... Take a look at W4CMG QRZ's web page
as Cathy was a beta tester for the Haptic Device.
I'm not sure if you caught that I called you TOM because I had the wrong
web page showing at the time of our QSO.... 72 Brian and thanks for the
contact.
Phil - K4PQC
