Another option for handle leather is a Goodwill store.  I also tried Tandy
without success.  I bought several plain leather belts from Goodwill for a
dollar or two.  The leather was easily cut to fit the brackets and after
some cleaning and some polish the problem was solved.

Your mileage may vary.

    This is a valuable resource, thank you David for posting it.  Beside the
leather handles they have looped handles and all sorts of hardware. 
I have found handles to replace the ones on Hewlett-Packard and other
electronic gear. They will also find stuff for you that is not in the
catalog.
    In the past I could get leather tailings at Tandy Leather but it was
destroyed by a new owner. I have occasions to repair old camera cases and
Breton's is one of the few sources of leather and hardware around.
    I have done business with them for many years and find them completely
reliable.
