This is the data sheet and price list I referenced. For an
operating and service manual see:
<http://jptronics.org/Mackay/mackay_3010B.pdf>
or:
<http://bama.edebris.com/manuals/mackay/ITT3010C/>
The PDF is cleaner.
I think there is yet another copy, a JPG but I can't find
the source.
Read the notice on the front: The 3010B and C are the same
except for one TC cap added to the B. There is also a note about
changing the rectifier diodes. Since only part numbers are given
I have no idea what this is but suspect that a higher voltage or
current diode was used.
There is some discussion to be found at various sites. Some
by people who seem not to be familiar with the receiver at all.
One remarks his receiver has backlash in the tuning but the
tuning is directly coupled to the capacitor in the VFO so that
doesn't really sound possible unless there is a loose shaft
coupler. Also, someone remarks that the hand selected diodes in
the first mixer have likely drifted and can be replaced by modern
Shotky diodes. This might explain why some think the receiver has
poor IMD performance. Also, the alignment of the intermediate
filters is likely critical, at least must be done right. If not
it could certainly contribute to poor IMD. I am amazed at how
often some sophisticated receiver or other equipment is reviewed
without insuring that its tuned up, has good tubes, etc. Too
often it looks like something was tested just as it came from the
trash can.
MacKay equipment was mostly built by Federal Telegraph and
Radio, which began as a manufacturer of arc converter
transmitters and was one of the founding companies of Silicon
Valley.
There is a good deal of history of Federal and MacKay on the
web. MacKay (pronounced Mac Key) was the rival of RCA but also
operated undersea cables in both Atlantic and Pacific service as
well as wireless telegraph and telephone service. The MacKay
family also operated Postal Telegraph company until selling it to
Western Union who pretty much destroyed it.
The next generation of receivers after the 3010 and the
similar receivers made by RCA and Marconi were far more
sophisticated, solid state, synthesized receivers. Harris also
made some. A different world.
I wonder if anyone on this list, I suspect David Ring, has
had experience with the 3010C either in commercial service or as
a ham receiver.
