I did exactly the same thing. I had a straight key and bug in
tandem but often just used the dash side of the bug for slower
code. Since it works sideways it has some of the advantages of a
sideswiper or bug in reducing muscle strain.
BTW, I have also seen occasional bugs drilled for mounting
bolts. Since the bug was often private property and not supposed
to be there all the time (there being the operating bench) I
suspect this was not so often done but certainly keeps the key
from sliding around and would keep it from falling off the bench
on a ship in rough seas. I have also seen bugs with suction cups
on the bottom.
Another thought (they are assailing me from everywhere like
flies) If a typewriter is oriented with the platen going from
stem to stern it suggests the whole radio assembly must be
oriented the same way if the typewriter is bolted into a
typewriter well. A "well" is the depressed area on the bench or
desk to set the machine at the proper height for typing There are
typewriter desks for office use which are similar.
