    I did exactly the same thing. I had a straight key and bug in 
tandem but often just used the dash side of the bug for slower 
code. Since it works sideways it has some of the advantages of a 
sideswiper or bug in reducing muscle strain.
     BTW, I have also seen occasional bugs drilled for mounting 
bolts. Since the bug was often private property and not supposed 
to be there all the time (there being the operating bench) I 
suspect this was not so often done but certainly keeps the key 
from sliding around and would keep it from falling off the bench 
on a ship in rough seas. I have also seen bugs with suction cups 
on the bottom.
    Another thought (they are assailing me from everywhere like 
flies) If a typewriter is oriented with the platen going from 
stem to stern it suggests the whole radio assembly must be 
oriented the same way if the typewriter is bolted into a 
typewriter well. A "well" is the depressed area on the bench or 
desk to set the machine at the proper height for typing There are 
typewriter desks for office use which are similar.
