McElroy shipped a metal clip like a Christmas ornament clip that attached
to the damper support post with a machine screw, which could be swung over
the vibrator (pendulum) holding it away from making contact with the dot
contact.
To use the McElroy semiautomatic key the clip was positioned to hold the
pendulum vibrator and the key rotated 90 degrees counterclockwise to rest
on its left side as you say. Then using the button finger piece to send
with the key could be used as a straight key.
My key (I was the second owner, the original owner was a WWII USN radioman
who bought the key from Ted McElroy himself when Ted visited his ship in
the Boston Navy Yard during WWII.
I didn't know what the clip was, so I took it off and threw it away!
