If someone would like to build a good sounding practice oscillator, have a look at my design for a repeater identifier tone generator. Schematic here:

I've used this circuit to replace the edgy and raw sounding repeater identifier oscillators in my VHF/UHF repeaters. It could make a very pleasant-sounding practice oscillator if fed to headphones or a amplified (computer) speaker.
