I've seen 24 hour versions of the red/green radio room clock, there were
made by Weems & Plath.

The modulation tones were usually between 400 and 600 Hz, UK ran a standard
440 Hz "A" note on the musical scale. USA ships were about 600 Hz.
Auto Alarm receivers had to respond to Spark transmissions because spark
was legal at their inception and continued to be legal in times of SOS. So
the auto alarm receivers responded both to unmodulated (A1) continuous wave
signals (CW) and modulated (A2) continuous wave signals (MCW).
Of course the driving force for Auto Alarm receivers was the expense at
having to pay for two operators (with 4 extra per day overtime) or three
operators on cargo ships. Some passenger ships ran with 2 operators and a
16 hour watch - but they weren't supposed to be able to do that, but their
Registry Nation permitted this. The ship with which I was involved in their
SOS, MS PRINSENDAM had two radio officers, and a 16 hour live radio watch
and 8 hours guarded by autoalarm.
