FROM: Bob Conder, K4RLC, a Neuropsychologist/ Applied Neuroscientist, is
pleased to present the first known German to English translation of the
classic article by Ludwig Koch on his scientific studies on learning and
mastering Morse Code:
Occupational psychology study of the activity of recording Morse code, at
the same time a new training procedure for radio operators by Ludwig Koch,
PhD, Braunschweig Technical University. Journal for Applied
Psychology and Character
Studies, February 1936, Volume 50, Issues 1 and 2, pp. 1-70.
Last year, Ray G4FON (SK) asked for my consultation as a Neuropsychologist/
Applied Neuroscientist for his Morse Trainer. It was to Ray’s credit that
he cared deeply about helping others learn and master CW. Ray continually
looked at ways to make his Morse Trainer a better venue for learning CW.
Understanding the intellectual history of the early training of commercial
and military Morse operators is part of the process.
While this is a seminal article, it does NOT answer all our questions. To
do so, we need to continue to seek earlier research, including the work by
Jost in 1897 and Lipmann in Leipzig in 1918. Further, we need to review the
World War II work by Dr. Taylor at Harvard, in training US Morse operators
for the war effort. Coming forward to today, we now have highly
sophisticated functional Brain Imaging techniques that show, in real time,
how Morse is processed along the same neural pathways as natural language.
I present this translation freely as a contribution to Morse Code
enthusiasts worldwide. Please let me know if you have other research
articles on Morse , or wish to discuss this.
Hope you benefit from this article and enjoy reading this historical
article.
