Selection of IMAP vs POP3 is at the client, and sometimes - but not 
always - has you point to a different "server" (in the sense of "waiter" 
rather than "repository", which doesn't change between the two access 
modes) but I do absolutely get your point about storage. I've been 
running my own domain and email server for years for that very reason: I 
didn't want to have to buy significant storage from an ISP when I could 
do it myself, and get instant, offline access.
