 Having worked in the same organizations as news writers for most of my career, my observations:

1.  Some are sensible "fact-reporters" who seek to get the facts straight and care about the details (within their resources to discover), 

2.  A second "touchy-feely" group that doesn't care too much about the details of the situation but want mainly to tell what they consider "the human story".  These people seem to able to misremember the details if it enhances the story of the people involved.
3.  A third "activist" group who have a sense that they know best and will actively suppress or distort facts to make a story fit their preconceived agenda.

This pattern is probably also true of the story-telling population at large but the problem is that news personnel claim to all be in group #1.
