It happens, David.

I remember once taking a break in a contest, I laid down on the shack floor
with the rig listening. I suddenly woke up, set in the chair and 
listened more
closely. Not only was it a new multiplier, but and over all new DXCC for me.
Amp was on, I called and happily got a new one. Poured a cuppa Java and
before I tuned away, he QRTed.

Also, when running mobile CW, pay close attention to the road, I heard an
old pal just sign hi call. I sent his call with a ? and my call K. We 
had a nice
chat and updated each other as I rolled down the road. I was not really
paying when he came on, but it rang my bell.

A few other times it has happened over my 64 years and it gives one a warm
fuzzy feeling.
